Yes, you will need to apply for a Visa to enter Sri Lanka. You have two options for this. Either apply for an ETA or Electronic Travel Authorization before you arrive or arrange a visa upon arrival. We would recommend the ETA method as this would certainly be the quickest option. A Tourist visa would be US $ 50 if applied online via the ETA option, or else if purchasing at the arrival counter it would be US $60. For families travelling with children under 12 year of age the visa is free but you need to go through the application process and get the visa stamped on the passports. Find more info at – https://www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa/
Sri Lanka is a popular year-round destination. All you need to know is which location to be at what time of the year. Its proximity to the equator means that while one section of the country is taking a beating with heavy rain, the other on the other hand would be soaking sunshine. All you need to know is when to hit the beach as the rest of the areas in mainland are accessible right round the year. December- April would be the best months for the West and South Coast of the island, while February – September would be the ideal months for the East Coast. October in general would be a wet month as it brings heavy rainfall to the whole island. Find out more about the different weather patterns in the country – Connect my blog article here
The official currency of the country is called the Sri Lankan Rupee and is usually denominated in the form of 10,20,50,100,500,1000 and 5000 notes. You have two options for exchanging your money. You could either do it at the arrival lobby exchange counters or can visit a local bank or licensed money exchangers when in the country to exchange. Changing your cash at the arrival lobby would be the option that we recommend. You also have the option of using the ATM machines that are all over the island which have different daily limits ( usually it’s Rs 100,000 per day) that you can use to withdraw as well.
Sinhalese is the language that is most spoken in Sri Lanka. Both Tamil and English are spoken as secondary languages but don’t worry, sign posts and boards in the country usually present information in all 3 languages. Sri Lankan English is similar to British English, but with lots of local words infused. Also, foreigners might need to listen closely at first to understand the accent.
We recommend you to purchase your mobile sim cards from the arrival lobby at the airport. Dialog and Mobitel are the best telecom providers in terms of coverage across the island, data and tariffs.
Sri Lanka is a country with a tropical climate that varies its weather patterns depending on the different monsoon conditions. Cotton would be the go to type of clothing while you might need some clothes that are light coloured which would cover your shoulders and knees so you could use the same for the religious site visits. Sandals, flip- flops for day time use would come handy while a good pair of trainers would be an advantage to have when doing the different climbs and treks.
Plenty of warm weather and sunshine but do not the humidity levels in the island could be averaging around 75% in certain areas.
The main contenders for transportation are buses, trains, tuk -tuks and private vehicles that you can hire to be driven around. To get the full experience of the island we recommend you to at least do one small journey in public transportation. Trust me you will always remember this. The train rides are quite scenic while the bus rides are going to test your adrenaline rush. Self drive is also becoming quite a popular option in the island. Whatever you chose, we got you covered.
